WOW! Moments: A Musical Legacy
Our beloved resident, Morrison McConnell, more often called “Mac” by his many friends and loved ones, was well known around The Pines of Newmarket for his remarkable musical talent. Music was Mac’s lifelong passion and he was a very accomplished musician. He played acoustic bass for many years with the Jersey Ramblers as "Pee Wee" McConnell. The Jersey Ramblers played at Rac's Hut, a popular country western nightclub in Jackson, New Jersey. As a member of the house band, Mac had the opportunity to play with many popular country music celebrities including Roy Clark, Patsy Cline, and George Jones. He later started his own band called Mac McConnell & The Virginians.
Mac’s son, Richard, inherited Mac’s love of music and impressive vocal chops. In fact, the two sang together for many years. Richard continued to sing with a group called the Gracenotes. On January 14, 2016, Richard and The Gracenotes came to The Pines to sing for Mac and all of the residents. Mac and his son were beaming with happiness throughout the entire performance. Mac’s heartfelt reaction was felt throughout the audience. Witnessing this moment of shared love of music between father and son was truly moving. The Pines’ staff, residents, and community felt so blessed to be a part of this very special and heartfelt moment.
Just a few short months after this WOW! Moment, Mac passed away peacefully on March 12, 2016 at the age of 88. A WWII Navy Veteran, a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Mac was truly an incredible man and an inspiration to everyone who crossed his path. Mac’s sincerity and positivity had a huge impact on our staff and residents alike. We are beyond thankful to have gotten to know Mac and his genuine love for life. We offer our deepest condolences to his friends and family.
